Venue Feature: Iberostar Cozumel

On my last trip to the Mayan I took the opportunity to hop the ferry to Cozumel and meet up with Karla Aquilar, the wedding coordinator at the Iberostar Cozumel. Iberostar Cozumel is a 4* all inclusive resort located about 25 minutes from the ferry dock and the downtown shopping area. Upon entering, I found the lobby area to be a little dark, but was excited to see what lay beyond.

A smaller resort with just under 300 rooms, I found the Iberostar to have some of the nicest manicured grounds with a pleasing layout, allowing you to enjoy the walk from room to beach, pool or restaurant. The resort offers three a la carte restaurants requiring advance reservations, as well as a good size buffet restaurant screened to keep the local wildlife out. (Although the odd resident cat has found a way to manipulate the tourists to let them in!)

Brightly coloured 2 storey bungalows house both superior and standard rooms, the difference being the superior units are located closer to the pool and beach. The resort also offers a limited number of suites great for families with young children. Room interiors are basic but clean, the hammock on the balcony or terrace being a great place to enjoy a morning coffee, or a pre-dinner nap.

By far the biggest selling point of this property is the feeling you get of being one with your surroundings. For laid back, informal guests who love nature, the Iberostar offers abundant wildlife and gorgeous grounds. Flowers, trees and ponds are home to not only birds and lots of butterflies, but also fish, coatis and plenty of iguanas. (Including the resident male, a HUGE orange monster of an iguana, reminding me of a Komodo dragon)

For weddings, the Iberostar offers three basic packages, ranging in cost from $999-2899 US dollars. The top two packages, the Silver and Gold Star would include up to 20 guests, with extra guest fees being $20 each. Included in the package are the basics such as bouquet and boutonniere, the ceremony location, sparkling wine toast and wedding cake. Also included is a semi-private dinner reception at one of the a la carte restaurants.

Popular ceremony locations include the beach, and a more private garden gazebo surrounded by jungle that is perfect for smaller weddings. Upgrades to a private reception are very affordable for a flat fee of $990 US dollars, which includes the dinner and open bar reception for 4 hours. Extras like sound systems or DJ, additional decor, or other special touches can always be added for an additional fee.

Nicole’s Opinion

Best Feature: Hotel – The grounds and the ambiance. Perfect for nature lovers and those who don’t want a fussy, formal property.
Best Feature: Wedding – The option of a flat fee upgrade to host a private reception.
Best Feature: Location – Cozumel is world renowned for divers and the access to underwater reefs. Great location for snorkelling and water sports, and is only a quick 40 minute ferry ride to Playa del Carmen.
Personal Tip: Brides & Grooms consider upgrading to a suite, located practically beachfront.

Overall, another property visited that I absolutely LOVED! I think it’s a great choice for Destination Weddings that have families with children, as well as for groups of just couples.  It’s a slightly rustic location that is perfect for brides and grooms looking for a laid back atmosphere for their family and friends, yet still offering a variety of wedding packages with affordable upgrades.
